Matthew 10:42 says, “And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”
Does a “slip and slide” count as a cup of cold water??
In our first outing of the summer, Curtis and I spent two days at a local camp not far from our own neighborhood. Each day, there were about 20 children gathered to hear a word from God, to learn how to read, and, maybe…..just maybe…..have a little fun on a hot summer day.
Our first day, Curtis read to a small group gathered in bean bag chairs, all of their legs sticking from the heat. In the meantime, I helped a young boy to write sentences in his journal. I could tell that there were a million other things he had rather be doing than writing these sentences (a trip to the dentist would have suited him just fine), but we made it through all three. Hands down, it was the toughest part of the day.
It was the second day that we brought the slip and slide with us. Some of the kids there didn’t know what it was, or what they were supposed to do. Ever looking for a chance to demonstrate his awesome skills, Curtis took the first run and it, and went flying head first down the plastic. A young girl looked at me, and said, “I’m going to get wet if I do that!” I said, “I know, that’s the point!”
Most of them still looked skeptical as a few of the braver ones took a try. They soon caught on that this was supposed to be a lot of fun.
For this fun time, it took a lot more than one cup of water, and, by the end of the play time, it was about as cold as bath water. I admit that it may not exactly have been what Jesus had in mind when he talked about giving a cup of cold water to a little one. But, I do think he was pleased. If Jesus walked with us in physical form in this day and time, and if he had showed up at camp with us, I’m sure that he would have enjoyed a turn with the rest of them. After all, this is the same guy who walked on water and enjoyed boat rides with his friends. If you don’t believe me, just browse the pictures. What kind of God wouldn’t smile with those kids?
